As I mentioned, their existence is intrinsically linked to the Halls of Flame. While charting their attacks on a map does not show these mountains to be the exact epicenter of activity, attack frequency does indeed increase the closer a civilization’s proximity to that area. Furthermore, modern expeditions have seen Afrit using this area as their abode.

Flocks leave the Halls at regular intervals during the day, searching for food. When they return in the dark of night, there is a lull in activity for many hours. In the upper regions, where their caves are exposed to the sky, the Afrit can be seen flitting around like maniacal fireflies. Historian Abubo, whose discoveries in this area will prove invaluable to this document, noted that this curiosity recurred nightly. If we take as fact that the Afrit have existed as long as other races, and have shared similar intellectual and cultural parallels, one may rationally call this activity “ritualistic.”

During these ceremonies, Abubo attempted to scale the sharp rocks of the region and enter the Halls themselves. While I could paraphrase his observations, I believe it would be more fitting to insert here one of his most fascinating accounts:

“With a mixture of dread and awe (and, yes, haste) I entered what scholars now call the Halls of Flame. My wildest imagination, at once predicting dark caves and the common trappings of such locales, could not have been more from the mark. Inside there is magnificent stonework of a talent I could not estimate. My frantic sketches will never convey their grandeur or detailed minutiae, but should give the reader an indication of the skill the hands that wrought this art possessed.
