Post Doom 3 Alpha
No, this post doesn't have any warez ;)

I just saw a video of the Doom 3 Alpha on youtube, and I've gotta say: that version looks a lot cooler than the version id gave us. In the alpha the sound effects were better, the guns were better, and the monsters had an all new creepiness to them (despite the fact that they used the same models). I also liked the fact that the main character was given a HELMET (since I hate the new doomguy's face).

One of my favorite bits, though, was how the game started you right off in the action; no cheesy intros, boring dialogue, ridiculous plot, or drawn out "INVASION!" scene. Just the "one man stands between Hell and Earth" line and a gun. From what I could tell from some research, the game was even structured like the original Doom; the levels were divided into three or more episodes with about 8-10 levels each.

I've never played the alpha, but I think it would be really nifty if, for a Doom anniversary present, id legally released the Doom 3 Alpha so that everyone can play it in all its glory.

Just some thoughts. :)

Unfortunately I don't think they will ever do it. They REALLY didn't like that alpha getting out, plus the rights to the alpha are no longer theirs.......Zenimax now owns the rights to it.

I never played it, but am interested as to why they seemingly changed directions on things.

Post Re: Doom 3 Alpha
From what I could see, the alpha had a much more action based tone, complete with action sequences of the doom guy leaping and rolling around corners to avoid fire and such. They were probably afraid that with all of their new effects, older PCs wouldn't be able to handle these action sequences, so they tried to tone the game down a bit to make it less action based and more "jump out of the closet" horror. Carmack himself said that he was "really paranoid about all the lighting effects and that they were killing the frame rate."

I also read that they decided to make the game more story based after reading about success stories like Half-Life, which was very story based. They were probably afraid that if they created another hum-drum shooter, nobody would be interested in it. I really didn't like the new plot very much though, and I don't think many others liked it either. :\

It was a huge letdown from what it SHOULD have been. I liked that monsters could come out fo the walls and what not. Hell was easily the best part of Doom 3, everything else was kinda meh. There is a mod called Last Man Standing and they did and excellent job with the maps on it, felt more like Doom.

Calimer and his team did a great job on that. I tested for them as well as helped his team adding Cdoom Coop into their package(I was a developer for cdoom before hexen). That alone was a great joint project between 2 mod teams. They were a very talented team, especially when it came to ideas, implementation, and coding.

Oh yeah, me and a friend played through Last Man Standing with Co-op, LOVED it. Everyone did a great job on that mod.

LMS is one of the few mods I have for Doom 3 (besides all the trashy minimods). It really is awesome.

Ahh, makes me want to play it again.
